Macquarie Christian Studies Institute (MCSI)
For a list of units offered by MCSI, along with descriptions of those units, see the MCSI entry under Descriptions of Undergraduate Units in this Part of the Calendar
The University reserves the right to change the content of, or withdraw, any unit which it offers. Students should also note that limitations on enrolment are imposed for some units.
Information given in this Schedule is correct as at 30 September 1999.
The Schedule of Undergraduate Units contains entries for all Divisions except the Graduate School of Management which does not offer undergraduate units. (The Graduate School of the Environment offers three undergraduate units.)
The information provided in the Schedule is in the following categories:
- Unit Code and Name
- An individual code has been allocated to each unit of study.
The code is:
- three or four letters to represent the subject area of the unit, as shown in the table of identification codes preceding the Programs of Study in Part 3;
- followed by one digit to represent the level of the unit: 1 = 100 level, 2 = 200 level, 3= 300 level, 4 = 400 level, 5= 500 level;
- followed by two further digits to distinguish the particular unit.
The unit name appears after the unit code.
- Credit Points
- Each unit has a credit-point value, which reflects the amount of work expected in a unit. A standard full-time student load is 68 credit points spread over three years. Class attendance is often only a small proportion of the total work load for a unit: tutorials, laboratory work, reading and research in the Library, writing assignments and study at home are all part of the work involved. It is expected that one credit point in a half-year unit involves, on average, four hours of work each week in that half-year.
Thus, a student enrolled for units totalling 12 credit points in a half-year should spend about 48 hours each week on work on these units.
Abbreviation CP or cp = credit points.
- Unit Designation
- Science
- Where this designation is shown beside a unit, the unit has been approved as a science unit for the purpose of the Bachelor of Science Degree Rules.
- Technology
- Where this designation is shown beside a unit, the unit has been approved as a technology unit for the purpose of the Bachelor of Technology Degree Rules.
- Commerce; Economics
- Where this designation is shown beside a unit, the unit has been approved as a commerce/economics unit for the purpose of the Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Economics Degree Rules.
- Medical Sciences
- Where this designation is shown beside a unit, the unit has been approved as a medical sciences unit for the purpose of the Bachelor of Medical Sciences Degree Rules.
- Social Science
- Where this designation is shown beside a unit, the unit has been approved as a social science unit for the purpose of the Bachelor of Social Science Degree Rules.
- Prerequisites
- This column indicates units which must be completed or requirements which must be satisfied before a student may enrol in the unit named. Where a prerequisite is expressed as a number of credit points, e.g. 18 cp, this means that the student must have completed at least that number of credit points towards the degree or diploma. Unless otherwise indicated, that number could include advanced standing for studies completed elsewhere.
The Head of the Division offering the unit may waive a prerequisite where he or she is satisfied that the student has a background of study sufficient to undertake the unit profitably. Any student who feels that he or she has grounds for requesting the waiver of a prerequisite should present the case to the Head of the Division concerned or to his or her nominee.
Where a prerequisite is shown followed by the symbol (C), a CQ result in that prerequisite does not satisfy the requirements for entry to the unit.
Where a prerequisite is shown followed by the symbol (B), students must obtain at least a B grade in that prerequisite.
Abbreviation GPA or gpa = grade point average. (See explanation at end of the section entitled Student Information in Part Three.)
- Corequisites
- This column indicates units which must be completed in conjunction with or prior to the unit named. Any student who feels that he or she has grounds for requesting the waiver of a corequisite should present the case to the Head of the Division concerned or to his or her nominee.
- NCCW (Not to Count for Credit With)
- Units shown in this column may not be taken for credit towards a Bachelor degree together with the unit named.
