Guide to the Calendar

The Macquarie University Calendar is the official handbook published each year by the University. It is intended for use by prospective, new and continuing students; staff; academic and industry colleagues; and the general public, as an official reference book to Macquarie University. It includes detail of University dates, staff lists, legislation, details of courses, degree rules and regulations, descriptions of units of study and other essential information.

The content of each of the five Parts of the Calendar is described below, including advice for students planning a course of study or otherwise investigating the wide range of academic options available at Macquarie University. A Summary Table of Contents appears on the following page which allows a clear overview of the structure of this publication.

The five individual Parts of the Calendar are distinctly marked with a band of black, visible along the page edges of the book, and a detailed Table of Contents appears at the beginning of each Part.

Part One -
University Overview

The first Part of this Calendar begins with an introduction to Macquarie University and gives general information about the campus. It includes the principal dates for 2000 and information on the various services, facilities and resources available to students and staff. Details of the various University museums, teaching collections, research resources and Centres are given.

Part Two -
Formal University Information

This part of the Calendar lists the University's governing bodies, committees, management and staff. It replicates the sources of authority that govern the University including the Macquarie University Act 1989, and By-laws. Specific regulations and rules refer to the Academic Senate, academic costume, the Schools, Interdisciplinary Centres, Convocation, fees, and University housing. Part Two also outlines the University policy relating to social legislation and includes a suggested Form of Bequest to the University.

Part Three -
Undergraduate Study

Undergraduate and prospective students will find in the third Part of the Calendar the Rules governing undergraduate study and all general information such as admission and enrolment, assessment, scholarships, prizes and programs of study.

New or intending students should first consult the general information chapter headed Student Information and then the overview of all undergraduate courses in the chapter Degrees and Diplomas Offered. Students can then refer to the specific Programs of Study chapter (also in Part Three) and the particular School or interdisciplinary study area in which their main interests lie. (Further detail about individual units of undergraduate study is contained in Part Four.)

The Programs of Study chapter also includes information relating to the honours courses, some diploma courses and the LLB, although these awards may sometimes be conferred on students who are already graduates.

Part Four -
Undergraduate Units of Study

This Part of the Calendar details every unit of undergraduate study. It contains the Schedule of Undergraduate Units followed by brief Descriptions of Undergraduate Units.

Part Five -
Postgraduate Study

The fifth Part of the Calendar contains all information relating to postgraduate study at Macquarie University.

Following the Rules governing postgraduate study, the Student Information chapter details information relating to admission and enrolment, student records, examinations, scholarships and prizes. An overview of all postgraduate courses available is given in the chapter headed Degrees and Diplomas Offered. Specific details of these courses are then given in the Programs of Study chapter under the particular School or interdisciplinary study area.
